2024 Alumni, Corey Day was selected for the 2025 VCE Season of Excellence Top Class, with the concert taking place yesterday, March 20th, at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Corey studied Music Inquiry last year, and his original composition ‘Flood’, that he created for his Externally Assessed Task in Unit 4, received high marks and praise from examiners. His composition was written for an orchestra and was inspired by the music written for the Dr Who TV series. This is a huge accomplishment and Corey’s VCE Music Teacher, Lisa Bektash was privileged to be in attendance at yesterday’s concert.

On top of that, Corey was also presented with the 2025 Margaret Schofield Memorial Scholarship (Composition), an annual scholarship for government school students who study a VCE Music subject and demonstrate a commitment to music composition and a future career in this field. It is the only scholarship of its kind in Victoria and the $8000 will go towards Corey’s aspiration to study Composition at University.
Furthermore, Corey was also recently selected to compose original music for PROJECT Z: a youth-led screen dance project that creates a forum for discussing issues that affect young people and how they relate to the world, empowering them to voice their ideas and perspectives. Corey was commissioned to create a soundtrack for a film that was edited by Erin O’Rourke (Telstra/Australian Ballet Emerging Choreographer of the Year, 2022) and was mentored by Speak Percussion. The film was premiered at Dancehouse in November 2024.
And just yesterday afternoon, Corey received word that he has been selected to participate in the Screenworks APRA/AMCOS Screen Composing Mentorship – where he will be mentored by Brett Aplin (AFI/AACTA and APRA award winning screen composer)!
91Ƭ is very proud of Corey and we look forward to seeing where this music composition journey takes him next.
